Coco Howard — Fighting the soft fight

Artist in Residency Work

I have worked as an artist in residence at Seattle area schools for eight years. I have worked extensively with the Lawton Elementary World Cultures Program, developing appropriate art curriculum for the various countries being studied, and facilitating cultural art projects for grades K through 5. These have included Korean mask making, Aboriginal bark painting, Ecuadorian weaving, needle felted pillows and wall hangings depicting regional animal and plant life, Chilean arpilleras, Mexican punched tin work, Aboriginal toas, spirit masks of Borneo, Haitian banners and Maori war shields.
I have also designed and facilitated needle felting projects, mixed media collage, plush toy making using recycled sweaters, and doll making using materials found in nature.
